Reminder - see you the 29th

Hi. EVENT REMINDER!

Got your RSVP. See you Wednesday night in Beverly Hills. If you can't make it please just email me a little note so we can cross off printing a badge for you.

I like to talk with as many people as I can during a mixer. Don't hang back waiting for when I'm not chatting with anyone. Please come right up and say hi as soon as you see me.

Some people are shy. The best thing to talk about when meeting someone new is good news in your life and appreciation for those who helped you achieve that. That reinforces that you're a winner, someone desirable to be around.

Please take a moment on the way to the mixer to contemplate the many good things that have happened for you recently so you're ready to talk about them. Some people have trouble thinking of these things because of the voice of their inner critic, that nothing they do feels good enough. The easiest way to overcome that is to express appreciation for the people who want to help you and who enrich your life through their love and support.

I try to recall everyone's name, but with more than 1,900 members that's hard. You name is your brand. It's important that people can recall your name. Make it easy. Slip in your name during conversation. For instance, I might say, "...so then she asked me, 'Robin, why did you write a screenplay about a bear who starts forest fires?'". Say your name at least three times during a conversation. People will remember your name better if they hear it more often, and you'll remember their names better if you say them more too.

Everyone in the group is friendly and wants to meet you.

Mingle with working screenwriters, actors and filmmakers. Sharky's Mexican Grill, 435 N. Beverly Dr., Beverly Hills. We're in the back room. Reminder for this Sunday

If you didn't get an email reminder like this, we don't know that you're coming...

Hi. Got your RSVP for Sunday's event. It's always fun to be on the lot at Raleigh Studios, and it's going to be a packed house. We're going to have a blast!

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS!

BRING HEADSHOTS. This is the opposite of our usual procedure because our speaker has requested headshots/resumes. You are ENCOURAGED to bring your headshot to give to talent agent Angela Hutchinson. PLEASE NOTE that this is only for this event, that unless a speaker requests it we ask that actors not bring headshots to ScreenplayLab.

ScreenplayLab is an open forum. Here's a copy of our standard audience release that you'll be asked to sign at the event:

http://screenplaylab.com/joy.of.the.pitch.html

Please arrive between 2:30 and 2:45 so we can check you in before 3pm. It's a 42-seat theater and will be packed. There's a 1-hour workshop reading from 3-4pm then our main speaker at 4:15pm.

We'll be handing out water and candy and name badges as usual. Please bring a few bucks to put in our tip jar. We've managed to keep our events free for two years, and it takes some resources doing that every week. Every bit helps.

If you can't make it, please have the courtesy to email to let me know. No big apology necessary. We know that half the people who RSVP won't be able to make it and most will have a good reason. Please make that an email, not a phone call, not a second RSVP with a comment, not a note through a friend. If you've already emailed to say you can't make it you can ignore this email. We cross out the cancellations by hand right before the event.

Agent Angela Hutchinson on Aug 26th

Talent agent Angela Hutchinson is our next speaker on Sunday at Raleigh Studios. She recently joined RPM Talent Agency and is looking for actors to represent. Details below. RSVP while you still can at www.ScreenplayLab.com. Also below, producer Jon Brown's tips for a great movie title, Gabrielle Pantera joins the BRITISH WEEKLY newspaper, Star Trek pilot screening, and much more...

Thank you director Buddy Bregman...

Director Buddy Bregman spoke to a full house at ScreenplayLab on Sunday. Special thanks to Raleigh Studios for hosting us! Buddy's directing a bio-pic called GARBO about Greta Garbo and another bio-pic called BLACK BUNNY about the first black Playboy bunny. He's directed stars like Donald Sutherland, Jane Fonda, Olivia Newton-John, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, and Jonathan Winters. As a composer and arranger, Buddy's worked with many jazz legends. His albums with Ella Fitzgerald have just been re-released. If you weren't there you really missed it!

Thank you pitch clinic participants...

We had three pitches scheduled, but only one person was ready. Justin gave a great pitch of his 1950s bio-pic. Way to go, Justin! We tried a new system where I pitch the writer's concept a couple times first for practice and audience feedback, then the writer pitches it himself. I'd noticed in the past that pitches get pretty good by the third try, but sometimes the feedback on the first two tries demoralizes the writer. Having me try the pitch first avoids that. Since we had time, I got to pitch three of my projects. That was great practice for me. Thank you to the audience for fantastic feedback.

RPM Talent agent Angela Hutchinson on Aug. 26th...

Gabrielle Pantera joins BRITISH WEEKLY...

Congratulations to ScreenplayLab co-founder Gabrielle Pantera! She's joined the BRITISH WEEKLY as book reviewer. BRITISH WEEKLY is a newspaper published in the USA for British expats. Gabrielle is the new book reviewer. A busy girl, she still works at the production company Irish DreamTime, she just cast the play ROMEO & JULIUS, and she's writing her next comedy screenplay. Gabrielle's reporter experience includes book reviewer for four years for ROMANTIC TIMES MAGAZINE and city beat journalist for the newspaper SAN DIEGO MARQUEE. Read her book reviews here:

Producer Jon Brown's tips for a great movie title...

From Jon's talk at ScreenplayLab last week. Need to come up with a great movie title? Try this:

1) is high concept
2) evokes an immediately feeling that you get what the movie is about without explaining anything
3) is funny (makes people laugh out loud when you say it in a room)
4) is two words you don't expect together (e.g., WEDDING CRASHERS)

Free Pitch Clinic on Aug 19th

Come to my free pitch clinic this Sunday. Then our main speaker is director Buddy Bregman. Buddy has an amazing career. As a director he's worked with Donald Sutherland, Jane Fonda, Olivia Newton-John, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Jonathan Winters and many more. We're going to have a blast in the pitch clinic and Buddy is going to share amazing stories and great career advice. Don't miss it!

Thank you Ensemble manager-producer Jon Brown...

Jon Brown held us spellbound at the Comedy Central Stage with the story of his career. It's easy to understand why his life rights were picked up by a studio for a movie! If you weren't at ScreenplayLab last night you really missed it. Coincidentally, Jon was once the agent for Buddy Bregman, our speaker this Sunday. Even I didn't know that. Special thanks to Comedy Central for hosting us.

Free Pitch Clinic on August 19th...

Need to practice your pitch in front of a live audience? This Sunday at ScreenplayLab is your chance! As session moderator I'll zero in on the essence of what's good in your pitch and make suggestions for improvements. Feedback from the audience, too. Even if you're not ready to pitch, you can learn a lot from watching others try. We all tend to make the same mistakes in pitching. To be selected to pitch send me an email with the genre and logline. Preference to upbeat commercial projects. (We're an open forum so take whatever protective measures you feel you need such as copyright or WGA registration.) This Sunday at 3pm at ScreenplayLab. But there's more...

Director Buddy Bregman on August 19th...

Also this Sunday at ScreenplayLab, right after the pitch clinic, our main speaker is director Buddy Bregman. Having sold more than 30 television shows to networks, he's going to have a lot to say about pitching. He's a director, a composer, a writer, a producer. His life is amazing. He's a top jazz composer. He has a 12-picture deal. He has a hit stage musical. He once triggered a DGA strike. He's the only American who's been the head of a British network. RSVP while you still can. Raleigh Studios, 5300 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Sunday, Aug 19th, 2007, 3pm to 6pm. Networking at 2:30pm. Free with RSVP using online form at www.ScreenplayLab.com.

We had a fantastic session yesterday with Jeanne Thompson from Sunrise Entertainment. She told us entertaining stories from her career. She explained why her production company chose to leave a first-look deal to go independent. She talked about the spec market for direct-to-DVD writers ($75k per script) and about using Walmart as a distribution outlet. If you weren't there you really missed it.

Robin Rowe reviews BECOMING JANE...

I've joined the British Weekly newspaper as film reviewer. My review of BECOMING JANE will be in the Monday edition of the paper. Here's an abridged version.

In Becoming Jane, the year is 1795 and Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) is a feisty 20-year-old aspiring writer who dreams of marrying for love. Her parents (Julie Walters and James Cromwell) notice Mr. Wisley (Laurence Fox), nephew to local aristocratic dragon Lady Gresham (Maggie Smith). Jane prefers the roguish Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy). Jane Austen is one of the most loved authors in English literature and there's much to like about the juicy premise of this movie.

The movie trailer would have you believe this is a cheery romantic comedy, but there's a deliberate melancholy to Becoming Jane. The middle is cheery and fun certainly, but the beginning is slow and dark, and the ending more so. This isn't the kind of consistently cheery upbeat tale that audiences expect of a modern Jane Austen film. More in keeping with Charles Dickens than Jane Austen, fans are unlikely to appreciate that this movie is on the dark art house side. Becoming Jane feels more like the movie Miss Potter, a movie about the unrequited love of a later popular British author, Beatrix Potter. Be prepared for as much of Austen's gothic novel Northanger Abbey as of Pride & Prejudice.

Jane Austen was more fun-loving than some think. "In some of her own letters she wrote about how she was hung over after attending a ball and that's not something that we necessarily think of when we think about Austen", says Anne Hathaway. Ultimately, it isn't that the movie strays too far away from what we expect of Jane Austen, rather that it strays from what we expect of a Jane Austen movie.

Robin Rowe seeks new hyphen, writer-director...

I really appreciate those who take the interest to ask me what's new, although I often give the short answer, "the usual". Actually, the usual is pretty unusual with me. For anyone interested, here's a quick note to bring you up to date.

Stepping back for a moment to 2003, I'd moved into an office at DreamWorks Animation to work on a renderfarm R&D project. While at DreamWorks they encouraged me to write a feature and to get an agent. Although I'd written for years as a journalist, I didn't know how to write a feature. It took me two years to get an agent and to complete my first real screenplay. It took three months for me to write my second screenplay.

Now in 2007, those first two screenplays are being considered for big budget studio projects. THE CORSET DIARIES, based on the best-selling novel, is a comedy about a genealogist who's a substitute wife and step-mom for a month. The script is being recommended by the manager of a top actress-producer as a project for 2008. FIRE BEAR is an original animated comedy about a bear who starts a forest fire and seeks redemption. It's being read everywhere.

My partner Gabrielle Pantera and I co-wrote THE CORSET DIARIES. With another writer, she co-wrote A MORE PERFECT UNION, an original comedy about an unemployed lawyer who masquerades as a Congressman. Gabrielle wrote THE GLAD GAME, a post-911 retelling of the bestselling classic novel POLLYANNA. That's being read at major production companies. She wrote a spec GREY'S ANATOMY episode that she submitted to the ABC Disney Fellowship and is being read at a major TV production company. She has an agent, too.

My current writing project is BOOK OF Z, a low budget martial arts action comedy. I will direct BOOK OF Z in 2008. I've directed before (music video, broadcast news, arts), but this will be my first feature. My change in focus toward directing means I'm inviting more ScreenplayLab speakers involved in directing or distribution. We always have fabulous speakers at ScreenplayLab, and I'm excited it just keeps getting better.

Thank you for all the referrals for doing comedy punch-up on scripts, producing, and journalism. If you need a director for your short let me know. I'm looking for practice before I shoot my first feature.
