Get a casting director for your next movie...

I noticed the renewal came this week for the RisingCast listing in the Hollywood Representation Directory. Of course, you know casting director Gabrielle Pantera casts all our ScreenplayLab readings and is a co-founder. Gabrielle is doing more writing these days, but she still casts indie features from time to time. If you have an upbeat commercial project that needs a casting director Gabrielle is fabulous. www.risingcast.com

Watch out for casting scams...

Hopeful beginning actors are unfortunately taken in by crooked casting notice companies. Any company that promises major auditions to non-union unrepresented actors is as crooked as Nigerian emails offering to send you millions in stolen loot.

The casting notices look real because real casting notices are stolen and edited to make them appear to be open auditions instead of agent submission only. Often the audition dates are already past and the crooks simply change the date to sometime in the future. The scam offers to send you great audition notices in a "free trial", but requires providing a credit card or checking account to sign up. As soon as they have that they start charging it immediately and won't stop.

Legitimate companies such as Breakdown Services send casting notices to agents and managers. ScreenplayLab got a fascinating look inside that business when Breakdown Services President Gary Marsh was a speaker two years ago. Casting notice companies can't offer notices to actors because most of the time casting directors ask them not to.

Smaller indie roles (especially non-union) go out to Actors Access (which is part of Breakdown Services), NowCasting, and Mandy. These no-pay/low-pay roles aren't worth an agent's time, so actors submitting themselves makes sense. Actors take these roles for their reel, but often fly-by-night producers never complete their movie and the actors get nothing. Sometimes there are good roles in notices sent to actors, maybe because the casting director didn't like any of the actors submitted by agents.

Get Your Film a Sales Agent for AFM...

Independent sales rep Brett Lauter is putting together a producers co-op for the American Film Market. Brett teaches film distribution at UCLA with Stacey Parks, who was a ScreenplayLab speaker last year. AFM Managing Director Jonathan Wolf spoke at ScreenplayLab speaker last year. AFM is like Cannes, but in Santa Monica in the beginning of November. It's a place you can take your independent film to sell foreign rights. Brett is looking for features, documentaries, and animation. Your film must be commercial, have its rights in order, have foreign rights available, and have a trailer. To join Brett's producers co-op is $2,500, assuming it's eight producers splitting the marketing costs for the show. Brett is discounting his commission to 12.5% for the co-op. Are You Ready to Stop Self-Sabotage?...

People write me to ask for favors, to ask advice for their situation or to refer them to an agent or studio executive. The requests cover the spectrum from reasonable to you must be kidding. Something interesting is how many people write me personally asking for help, but don't give their name. By that I mean no name in the email address and no signature block in the email.

People (I have to assume they're people; they don't have names) also write to ask me to recap everything they missed at ScreenplayLab last week (they RSVPed, but weren't there) and to also pass along an unsolicited script to the speaker. It would be easy to think it's ignorance or even bad manners, but I know better. People are doing these things in order to fail.

Many people sabotage their careers because they consider themselves unworthy of success. Not saying who they are or not coming to the point when asking for help are just a couple self-sabotage techniques. Here's a good one. Sometimes writers send scripts to me that have spelling errors on every page. I once asked a writer, who'd written a pretty good script, why he sent me a script full of spelling errors. He said he knew I wouldn't like it anyway!

Unfortunately, we all engage in self-sabotage sometimes. We assume a person is angry when he's really just busy. Or, we're in a hurry ourselves and don't extend as much courtesy as usual. Maybe we start writing a screenplay and never finish it. Or, get an agent interested and not call back. Whatever the reason we do these things, we need to remember that we're all artists worthy of success.

Thank you Neely Swanson and David E. Kelley Productions!

If you didn't make it to this week's speaker and the workshop you really missed it!

Thank you Neely Swanson and David E. Kelley Productions...

Neely Swanson, SVP of development at David E. Kelley Productions, gave a fantastic presentation to a packed house yesterday. David E. Kelley is known for character-driven legal dramas such as BOSTON LEGAL and ALLY McBEAL. Kelley has written more than 600 show episodes himself.

Neely proves that a mid-life career change is not too late to make it in Hollywood. Her husband Larry, a professor, was with us yesterday and is very proud of her. With his encouragement, Neely changed careers and started at the bottom as a temp assistant in legal affairs at Fox. After moving to Fox business affairs, Neely followed her boss, Pamela Wisne, when Wisne became an executive vice president at Kelley Productions. When Neely started at Kelley Productions it was a small company, and Neely made herself available to do anything that would help out, especially reading scripts and doing coverage.

Neely reads about 250 television script submissions and 47 novels in a year. She loves to read and reads everything herself, cover to cover. She looks at scripts primarily as writer submissions (samples), not for development. Novels are considered for development, but it's rarely bestselling authors. As writing samples, Neely doesn't read features, procedurals (e.g., CSI) or short stories, but does read spec episodes of current television shows, original pilots, and some plays. In all cases she's looking for character-driven and not plot-driven material (which is why no procedurals). There are few writer openings.

An outstanding one-hour dramedy spec (such as, UGLY BETTY) is the easiest way to get on Neely's Recommend or Consider list for a writer position. She does read specs for shows they produce, but says a BOSTON LEGAL spec is a handicap because such scripts are read with higher expectations. Neely reads novels as galleys, before publication. The one novel she picked up the rights to this year is Joseph Wambaugh's HOLLYWOOD STATION, a police drama.

Neely was very generous with us, sharing her inspiring career and work highlights, answering an hour of audience Q&A, and staying afterwards to take questions individually in the lobby. Neely gave precise instructions what type of material she would read and how it should be submitted.

Thank you to everyone at the BOOK OF Z reading...

Most weeks at ScreenplayLab, before the main speaker, we start with a workshop reading. It feels like a writers room as we test new material. ScreenplayLab only reads comedies or upbeat dramas.

Have you ever wondered what ScreenplayLab is doing at the start of the event, why we won't let you in the theater yet? Casting director Gabrielle Pantera is preparing her actors and they are busy highlighting their lines with markers. The actors are being reminded to be loud, enunciate, but not go big (that is, don't be a ham).

Mark Harmon (of NCIS), showed me how to look at the line on the page, flash memorize it, then look up and deliver it. When reading, be careful not to hide your face and talk into the pages. Because we read faster than we can speak, at a cold reading there's a natural tendency to go too fast. It's very hard for an actor to detect when his delivery is too fast, but you can tell because you'll start tripping over your own words. Just slow down. Remember: loud, clear, and intimate.

This week we read pages 40 to 56 of my new martial arts action comedy feature, THE BOOK OF Z. It's the story of a chiropractic college student pursued by power-mad ninjas in Koreatown because a Korean family has entrusted him with an ancient book. It's for audiences that like KUNG FU HUSTLE and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Because I was still writing pages on Saturday, the actors did not get the pages beforehand and had to read it cold.

Gabrielle Pantera: casting director
Jennifer Simms: narrator
John Stancari: Max, Tosso
Shereen Saiyad: Nichi, Officer Rodriguez
Jim McCaffree: Lot, Gasso,
Angela Floyd: Special Agent Smith
Joey D'Auria: Professor Barnes, Poh, Tommy, General Chew

Gabrielle cast some roles with ScreenplayLab regulars and some with newcomers. As we always do at readings, we first had the actors mention their latest news. Jennifer Simms was on the cover of the NEW YORK TIMES on Thursday for her role in MAD MEN. John Stancari just made the quarter-finals in the Page Screenwriting Awards. Jim McCaffree is playing weekly in murder mystery theater (DinnerDetective.com) and also in the short HOW WE MET. Jim is one of dozens of actors who signed agent representation as a result of a ScreenplayLab referral.

Shereen Saiyad moved to Hollywood recently. In the Philippines she's been in indie movies, won beauty contests, and was in the December issue of MAXIM. Angela Floyd can be seen daily on every flight AMERICAN AIRLINES donning the oxygen mask in the instructional video. Angela also writes sitcoms. Joey D'Auria is three of the voices in the animated THE MISTER MEN.

Except for the narrator, ScreenplayLab actors stand so they can move around and make eye contact. After the reading, our actors give feedback first, followed by those who raise their hands in the audience. We're different from other groups in that we don't allow critique. I believe constructive criticism is an oxymoron. When someone offers criticism he or she is tearing down the artist, not adding anything. Our feedback sessions are moderated to answer two important questions.

Question one: What did you like? As obvious as it may seem to the audience, what's good may not be obvious to the writer and sometimes there are surprising differences of opinion across the audience. It's important to know what's good so it won't get lost in rewrite, a pitfall encountered by many Hollywood scripts. Besides, it's encouraging to the writer to hear that he or she got something right. Quieting the inner critic avoids writer's block.

Question two: How would you improve it? Our audience is full of talented writers, actors and filmmakers. That you know how to elevate material is the difference between an artist and a critic. I often find, when going through this process with other writers' pages, that I give suggestions that I could use myself in my own writing. We all face similar issues in our screenplays, but it's easier to see when looking fresh at someone else's material.

The actors and audience were outstanding. People were engaged by the story and had many things they liked and many suggestions. Several commented that the short montages being used for exposition could be made more interesting. Other notes were how to make a couple of the scenes funnier and how to make the lead character more motivated and heroic.

How actors get in our casting database...

Casting director Gabrielle Pantera accepts headshots/resumes only through automated upload into her RisingCast database, not by mail or email. Actors can go to www.RisingCast.com and follow the upload link. YOU WILL NEED A SECRET PASSCODE FOR UPLOAD ACCESS. Email me or Gabrielle to ask what that code is.

David E. Kelly executive on July 22nd

Our speaker this Sunday is David E. Kelley development executive Neely Swanson. If you're interested in writing for shows like BOSTON LEGAL this is your opportunity to ask how to do it. No surprise, this event is already close to being full. So, don't wait! FREE. Details below.

Thank you National Lampoon and Barry Layne...

National Lampoon development executive Barry Layne gave an awesome presentation last Sunday. Thank you Barry! National Lampoon is developing $3M comedy features and also a comedy television series. Barry was extremely generous to extend to writers in the room an opportunity to join their "baby writers" mentoring program. If you weren't there, you missed it.

Kudos to our three pitch clinic participants last Sunday...

* Joey D'Auria: THE GRAYS OF ROSWELL animated comedy TV series
* Sandra Milliner: Pitching herself as an actor-director
* Karen Knotts: BUT WE OPEN TONIGHT stage play

Participants in our ScreenplayLab pitch clinic test their pitches in front of a live audience. I moderate, and everyone gives suggestions. Our pitch participants not only discover ways to improve their pitches but help all of us understand the pitch process better. We schedule pitch clinics on the third Sunday of the month, instead of a reading.

David E. Kelley Executive Neely Swanson on July 22nd...

ScreenplayLab presents David E. Kelley Productions SVP Development Neely Swanson [IMDB]. Neely Swanson has worked on BOSTON LEGAL, THE PRACTICE, BOSTON PUBLIC and ALLY McBEAL. Neely got her start in entertainment as an assistant in Business Affairs at 20th Century Fox Television. She made the move to David E. Kelley Productions when her boss, Pamela Wisne, became its Executive Vice President. After rising to VP of Business Affairs, Neely made the transition to development where she targets writers for their shows and projects, both feature and television. Our ScreenplayLab workshop will be a reading by actors of 30 pages from the martial arts comedy feature BOOK OF Z by Robin Rowe. Raleigh Studios, 5300 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Sunday, July 22th, 2007, 3pm to 6pm. Networking at 2:30pm. Free with RSVP online at www.ScreenplayLab.com (not by email).

Congratulations Janice! Comedy screenplay MARTIAL ARTISTE, co-written with Susan diRende, was named one of five finalists in the River City Write Off screenwriting competition. And, her one-woman drama about Mary Shelley, SHADOWS ROUND THE MOON, is one of six finalists in the stage play division of the Moondance International Film Festival.

Sharon Shipley advances to quarter-finals in PAGE Awards...

Congratulations Sharon! From 3,411 entries in the 2007 PAGE International Screenwriting Awards competition, Sharon Shipley's script has advanced to the quarter-finals.

Comedy Central Stage joins ScreenplayLab...

ScreenplayLab is possible thanks to the generosity of our host theaters. We couldn't offer free Hollywood events without their help. Thank you Comedy Central Stage! ScreenplayLab's first event in this 99-seat space will be with producer Jon Brown on Wednesday, August 15th.

The Comedy Central Stage is a cool theater space for comedians, actors and writers at all professional levels to develop ideas, while also giving them the chance to hone and polish their material in front of a live audience. Located in the heart of Hollywood, this alternative space allows Comedy Central to discover and nurture tomorrow’s stars, as well giving today’s stars a place to play. The goal? To be the next big thing on Comedy Central!

WGA Strike coming on October 31st?

Time to sell your script! Studios and networks are reportedly stockpiling enough scripts to last a year in anticipation of what many see as an inevitable and long WGA strike over DVD royalties. Some TV writers are being promoted to producer (management) where they're beyond the reach of unions. WGA recently succeeded in organizing four of the top Comedy Central TV series, but stumbled badly in it's efforts to organize reality TV. Last year's unsuccessful WGA strike against CW's AMERICA'S TOP MODEL cost those reality writers their jobs and scared away other reality writers. It didn't help that the IATSE Motion Picture Editors Guild, that covers editors and readers, considers reality writers their turf. Perhaps more chaos, SAG could strike when their contract expires on June 30th.

LAST CALL: Mixer on the 9th

Hope you had a great day on the 4th of July! We listened to THE SWING DOLLS sing Volare with a 60-piece band and watched the fireworks at Warner Central Park. I'm told there were 40,000 people at the event. It was hot! While there I ran into actor Jerald Garner [IMDB], who I hadn't seen in about a year. He has exciting news! He was a military officer in TRANSFORMERS. And, he's shooting today in an episode of UGLY BETTY.

Our first mixer at the new location in Beverly Hills is this Monday night, 6-9pm, at Sharky's Mexican Grill. We're going to have a blast! West-enders, you've got no excuse for missing this one! I love the location because I can walk there. Easy public transportation, too. Take the Wilshire or the Santa Monica bus and get off at Beverly Dr.

We have 40 RSVPs for Monday so far. The room, which is enclosed but outside, seats 50. There's no smoking at any ScreenplayLab event. Place your order at the counter and pay in advance. No fussing over the check. The food is inexpensive and uses organic ingredients. Park across the street in the Beverly Hills city garage for $2, next to the Crate & Barrel store. It's not far from the Museum of Radio & Television.

ScreenplayLab Mixer on July 9th in Beverly Hills...

NEW LOCATION! Time to network! Mingle with working screenwriters, actors and filmmakers. Need help on your next project? Need an agent? Need a mentor? Need a job? In Hollywood it all comes down to networking. If we sit at home we might as well be back in Kansas, right? You buy your own drinks and food (inexpensive). Sharky's Mexican Grill, 435 N. Beverly Dr., Beverly Hills. Park in city garage next to Crate & Barrel for $2. July 9, 6pm-9pm and maybe later. Please note in the RSVP if you have to come late. FREE with RSVP at www.screenplaylab.com (not by email).

Update on script criteria for ScreenplayLab workshops...

I've updated our web page that explains the criteria for scripts submitted for our readings. We've been getting mostly unsuitable material lately, so I hope this helps. We don't get many script submissions. And, that's fine because I personally evaluate them. If we got a lot I wouldn't have the time. What we would like is that more scripts get selected for reading. That means upbeat commercial material please. Even if you haven't written a script yet, follow this link because halfway down the page is a pie chart of what genres are selling.

Correction regarding Buddy Bregman's GARBO...

I mentioned last time that director Buddy Bregman signed a 12-picture deal with a new studio in Spain. The first movie he's shooting there is GARBO, but it's the story of Greta Garbo, not the WWII movie of the same name. And, U.S. distribution hasn't been set yet. Sorry I mixed that up, Buddy! When Buddy speaks at ScreenplayLab in August he'll share with us many interesting experiences, including selling over 30 sitcoms to networks.

More ScreenplayLab Speakers Coming Up...

I was chatting today with Sunrise Entertainment creative executive Jeanne Thompson. Sunrise is looking for family comedy features, if you have an agent, of course. Jeanne will be speaking at ScreenplayLab on August 12th.

He also has the smash musical ALL THAT SWING running in Berlin. Buddy's daughter Tracey Bregman is Lauren on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. Buddy will speaking at ScreenplayLab on August 19th.

I haven't opened RSVPs for these speakers, yet. Stay tuned.

Kelley Productions SVP of Development Neely Swanson is Sunday, July 22nd. Both at Raleigh Studios next to Paramount. RSVP online at www.ScreenplayLab.com (not by email!). These events are FREE.
