ScreenPlayLab Free Linux Laptops Project...

ScreenPlayLab is giving away laptops to struggling Hollywood writers, actors and production crew. Having a laptop is vital in Hollywood when applying for work and for doing work. ScreenPlayLab members are donating obsolete Windows 2000 laptops, and I'm installing the latest Linux software on them.

I know Linux as a studio technologist and a contributing editor to the largest circulation Linux magazine Linux Journal. Some people are unaware that Linux is the most popular operating system at studios for creating visual effects and feature animation, that it's not Mac OS X or Windows running Hollywood.

Since April we've given away five Linux laptops to struggling writers, actors and production crew. You can help by giving us your obsolete laptop, the one that may be gathering dust in your closet because it's full of viruses or just too slow. We'll refurbish it and give it to someone who really needs it. Another way to help is through a financial donation so we can buy WiFi cards or other parts we need. If you'd like to donate your old laptop, email me. For details to become a sponsor or to apply for a free Linux laptop:

ABC Disney Career Event May 17th

If you know a writer, actor or director who's struggling to break into the business, maybe someone disadvantaged who's over 30, female, minority, disabled or simply someone who isn't getting a break for lack of having a connection to the Hollywood scene, ABC Disney is a big opportunity. Many fellowship winners have become studio executives. It's a career fast-track.

This Sunday at ScreenPlayLab, ABC Disney Fellowship director Frank Gonzalez will talk about work opportunities and answer audience questions. It's the one time a year there's open access to an ABC Disney exec to get career advice. There's no fee to enter the ABC Disney Fellowship. It's all about talent and being ready to hit the big time. Find out what it takes to make it.

FREE event with RSVP at www.screenplaylab.com.

If you want to hear the inside track on what's happening at ABC Disney, please join us on Sunday. If you can only make it to one ScreenPlayLab event a year, this is it. It's our biggest event every year.

Jim Shea Passed Away...

I got a note from Sandy Shea letting me know that Jim Shea passed away. Jim led the Comic Book and Graphic Novel Writers Group that met the 4th Tuesday of the month at Paty's Restaurant in Toluca Lake. You may have seen Jim at some of our ScreenPlayLab events, too. If you knew Jim and want to send a note of condolence, email that to me marked to forward to Jim's wife Sandy.

David Dean Bottrell on Criminal Minds May 14th...

David Dean Bottrell, who stars in the Bad Kitty comedy short I'm editing for John Stancari, has a guest role on Criminal Minds tonight at 9pm. Bad Kitty is the story of an adorable Persian cat who isn't what he seems. We completed the edit this week, so it's off to the composer next.

Thank You Everyone at the Monday Mixer...

ScreenPlayLab is such a fantastic group of warm, generous people! What a pleasure our monthly mixer is, although it does get loud with everyone talking! We had 50+ people at Monday's event, including writers, actors, producers, directors, distributors and finance. I met someone there who I'm going to work with on a project. I hope you did, too. I'll announce June's mixer soon.

Someone at the mixer suggested broadening my horizons, to find the perfect job for my career. I think that's a great idea. Although I recently sent my resume to the television shows Fox Glee and ABC Cougar Town, I'm having trouble imagining exactly what my dream job would be. Can you help?

Visualizing a Great Job for Robin...

I'm a big believer in the power of positive visualization, of making something happen by powerfully imagining it. If that idea isn't too metaphysical for you, please take a moment to visualize me in a great job that really utilizes my talents. Imagine big! If you feel like it, send me a note describing what you imagine.

A quick background, I used to have a big office at DreamWorks Animation. I left DreamWorks to focus on the creative side, especially writing. Before DreamWorks I worked for The BBC and NBC. I'm a broadcast television news producer, writer, HD camera operator, Final Cut Pro editor, creative technologist, and of course, co-founder of ScreenPlayLab.

Reminder: Mixer tonight

This note went out to everyone on the RSVP list...

Hi. Looking forward to seeing you. I got your RSVP for our event tonight (Monday) at Sharky's in Beverly Hills. That's on North Beverly Drive, south of Santa Monica Blvd. (Don't confuse it with the other Beverly that goes east/west.) Park on the street free or underneath Crate & Barrel across the street for $3.

Please say hi to me when you arrive and also goodnight when you leave. I like to talk to everyone. You're such a great group of positive upbeat people that I wouldn't want to miss seeing anyone.

You can order Mexican food at the counter in front and have it brought to your table in the back room. Drinks can be ordered in the back room only. It gets noisy in the back room. If it gets too loud for you, try the middle room where there are fewer people.

It's a party, and it's also an opportunity to make a great first impression on people you may work with some day. Bring your most upbeat positive self. Have in mind some recent personal success, related to the industry, that you can share as good news in conversation. Everyone prefers to work with winners.

Feel free to introduce yourself to anyone and everyone. Everyone is there to meet someone as charming as you. A question you'll hear at the mixer is, "What can I do for you?". Be ready with an answer.

When you sign in at the event you'll be asked to agree to our usual "Tell Us No Secrets" release. There's a link to that agreement on our home page if you want to read it ahead of time. Essentially, it says that you'll take whatever precautions you consider necessary to properly protect your ideas, such a WGA or copyright registration, before discussing your ideas at a public venue like ScreenPlayLab.

In the unlikely event you encounter anyone being negative, someone who's engaging in career self-sabotage by talking about personal failure or distrust of the industry, please let me know right away. If I can't help them I can ask them to leave.

The most powerful force in Hollywood is a referral. People may think they need to meet a producer or agent, when who they really need to meet is the friend of a producer or agent. That could be anyone.

Love you guys!
