Do You Want to Meet an Agent?

Someone wrote me to ask, "Will there be any agents at Gabrielle's birthday party/mixer on Monday?". I answered, "Probably, but do you really want to meet an agent cold?"

When meeting with an agent or a producer, you want that meeting to be at his or her office where the focus will be on you. Pitching yourself at a noisy party isn't ideal. The best way to get that office meeting is through a referral from the friend or client of the agent or producer. That person with an existing relationship is who you want to connect with at a mixer. Meeting the agent or producer at a party is fine, but finding the person who can make a phone call to recommend you is gold.
