LAST CALL for Trick or Treat-ment Intensive

Starting October 1st, I'm leading a group of writers in a 1-month intensive. We'll cover loglines, treatments, scene cards, synopses, and reverse adaptations from screenplay into a novel, children's book, or graphic novel. The goal of this course is to help writers, including myself, write better treatments so we can write better screenplays faster and pitch story ideas better.

We're going to have a blast! Each week there will be a 1-hour conference call where I invite industry VIPs, people who get a lot of loglines and treatments, to ask what they like to see. For anyone who doesn't know, every week for more than two years I've been getting the speakers for ScreenplayLab. Since we don't need people in the course there to "get to" VIPs, I'm not going to say in advance who it will be.

We'll study treatments of today's major movies and television, then apply the lessons learned to our own screenplays. Each week we'll meet at a restaurant in Beverly Hills to go over our homework and have fun.

Our first conference call session is Oct. 1st from 5-6pm. After that session we'll stay on the line and hammer out a schedule for the rest of course that works best for everyone. Schedule is not an excuse for missing this course!

Meeting weekly for the month of October. You can read the syllabus by following the link below. Cost $220. There are seven of us in the group so far, five women and two men. If you're looking for a writers group where you can make breakthroughs and develop your projects quickly, this is it. Don't miss it!

Free Screening of LIMON: A LIFE BEYOND WORDS

Thank you to Screening Services Group for inviting ScreenplayLab to a free screening of LIMON: A LIFE BEYOND WORDS at the Fine Arts Theatre on October 3rd. Followed by Q&A with filmmakers and Hector Elizondo who I'm sure you recognize from all of director Garry Marshall's movies. Something you probably don't know about Hector, he was a dancer in the Jose Limon Dance Company. (Something you probably don't know about me, I was a dance major at the University of Illinois and in a dance company called Abiogensis in Chicago.) Details below...

We had a great mixer at Sharky's last night. Fifty people came. One filmmaker even brought a documentary film crew with him! I got to chat with a DP from Ireland, a producer putting together a major movie, an agent in training, and many other interesting people. I love this town! Thank you for coming out to play.

Trick or Treat-ment still $175 for one second longer...

The only reason my TRICK OR TREAT-MENT course is still at the intro price of $175 is I'm too busy to update the price to $220. (This week execs at two TV networks said I can pitch series ideas to them.) Five writers have enrolled in my course so far. That's fine, a small class is good. We're going to have a blast! For our conference calls I'm leading I'm inviting special guests. We'll hear from VIPs who look at a lot of loglines and treatments, find out what they look for. We'll study treatments of today's major movies and apply the lessons learned to our own screenplays. Each week we'll meet at a restaurant in Beverly Hills to go over our homework. I'm bumping up the price to $220 as soon as I can find a minute, so jump in now if you want the discount.

Free Screening of LARS AND THE REAL GIRL

Thank you to MGM for inviting ScreenplayLab to a free screening of LARS AND THE REAL GIRL at the Hollywood Arclight on October 2nd, ten days before it opens in theaters. Details below...

Last call to enroll in TRICK OR TREAT-MENT at the intro price of $175. If you want to join me on an adventure in screenwriting that will take a select group of us to a higher level in writing and pitching, now's the time. Treatments and scene cards are amazingly powerful tools. AFI, USC, UCLA...none of them offer a course like this. TRICK OR TREAT-MENT is about getting to the bones of your story so you can rip through writing it and pitch it confidently. If you're going to miss having writer's block and being tongue-tied in the pitch, don't take this course! And because a number of people wrote to say they had a conflict with Tuesday nights, I'm changing the class schedule to accommodate. Supports distance-learning, too. You don't even have to be in Hollywood. What's your excuse for missing this opportunity? Details below...

Trick or Treat-ment course starting October 1st...

A select group of us are taking our writing and pitching to a higher level through mastering treatments, scene cards, synopses, and reverse adaptation. Led by ScreenplayLab co-founder and journalist Robin Rowe. Starts October 1st, 2007, with bonus pre-course sessions on September 25th and September 30th. Introductory price for this 5-week course is just $175. Enroll now! Don't miss it!

VIP guests added to Trick or Treat-ment...

One more reason to enroll in my TRICK OR TREAT-MENTS course, executives will be joining us to talk about what they like to see in a treatment. I'm not going to tell you who it is in advance, but from the speakers I've brought to ScreenplayLab for the last two years you know it will be good!

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL screening on Oct. 2nd...

Robin Rowe joins HOLLYWOOD TODAY...

See you Tuesday night

If we got your RSVP you got this email reminder...

Hi. Got your RSVP for Tuesday's ScreenplayLab event. We have a fantastic evening planned! You can park in the public garage next to Crate & Barrel for $2 after 6pm. There's no program tonight, so if you have to arrive late it's ok. If you won't be able to make it please email me a note so we won't print a badge for you.

As usual at ScreenplayLab, at check-in you will be asked to sign a release:

http://screenplaylab.com/audience.release.html

How to work a room...

At a mixer, the objective is to present yourself truthfully in the most successful light possible and avoid saying anything that could be interpreted as a complaint (because it will be perceived as lack of success). On your way to the event think about what recent successes you've had, whether major or minor, so you have something positive ready to share with others you meet.

Feel free to introduce yourself to anyone. If you're in a conversation you'd like to end, excuse yourself by saying you see someone else you need to talk to. When you arrive please say hello to your hosts (that's me and Gabrielle) and also say goodnight when you leave.

Gotham Group vice president Julie Kane-Ritsch is our next speaker. If you're thinking about writing a children's book or developing material for animation you don't want to miss our special Monday-night event at the Comedy Central Stage in Hollywood on the 17th. Special thanks to Comedy Central for hosting us. Info below. Free.

Gotham Group manager-producer Julie Kane-Ritsch on Sept 17th...

ScreenplayLab presents Gotham Group manager-producer Julie Kane-Ritsch [IMDB]. Since joining Gotham in 1999, Julie Kane-Ritsch has been developing animated and family entertainment projects for television, feature films and publishing. She is currently a co-producer on the feature film THE SPRIDERWICK CHRONICLES to be released by Paramount Pictures. 30-minute talk followed by an hour of audience Q&A. Comedy Central Stage, 6539 Santa Monica Blvd.,Los Angeles. Monday, Sept. 17th, 2007, 8pm to 9:30pm. Free residential street parking nearby (check signs, or for $5 in lot on Hudson). Free with RSVP online at www.ScreenplayLab.com.

Thank you GREY'S ANATOMY executive producer Krista Vernoff...

Thank you to Krista Vernoff for speaking on Sunday at Raleigh Studios. She spoke to an enthusiastic packed house. Special thanks to Raleigh Studios for hosting us.

Krista's career advice was to not dilute yourself, to be really clear with people whether you're primarily an actor or writer. When Krista arrived in Hollywood to seek a career as a writer, she kept secret that she had a degree in theater from Boston University and had been a working performer singing on cruise ships such as the Portland Spirit. She and her boyfriend at the time John O'Brian, another Oregon actor, came to Hollywood with nothing. John would later write STARSKY AND HUTCH and DUKES OF HAZARD.

Krista had written several spec TV scripts and volunteered to be a reader to a producer she met at Women in Film. After months working for free as a reader, the producer unexpectedly referred her to an agent. Krista described selling a pitch for LAW AND ORDER in the first sentence. After 200 episodes, she came in with a story idea that they'd not heard before. Her boutique agent left, so Krista jumped to CAA. Then she got on CHARMED. After three years she decided to leave CHARMED, despite being offered double her salary to stay. Again she had no money, due to emptying her bank account for her wedding. (She and her husband Kevin now have a six-month-old daughter Cosette.)

Krista took a job instead on a little no-heat pilot called SURGEONS. The first 13 episodes were made in a bubble. The show wrapped before it aired. Krista did a pilot for her own show LENNIE ROSE, which didn't get picked up. Shonda brought her back to SURGEONS, renamed GREY'S ANATOMY, and the show climbed to #1.

Thank you for workshop reading of BOOK OF Z...

We read pages 67-84 of my feature martial arts action-comedy BOOK OF Z. The feedback was very positive, that the audience liked the action and the comedy. Kudos to Gabrielle for the casting and to our actors:

Gabrielle Pantera: casting director
Heather Ignacio: narrator
John Stancari: Max, General Chew
Stefany Northcutt: Nichi
Jim McCaffree: Lot, Gasso, Tommy
Xaque Gruber: Dr. Stroustrup

The TV Experience on Sept. 14-18th...

Presented by Gary Shusett and Sherwood Oaks College, meet up to 70 professional contacts in four days. I'm the panel moderator on the 14th. Producers, agents, managers, directors, and actors that work in TV. Why TV? Movies often take seven years to make while TV can take less than a year and is ongoing employment. $99 to $325.

REMINDER Grey's Anatomy EP on Sunday

This note went out to those who RSVPed to our event Sunday. This event is full.

Hi. EVENT REMINDER!

Got your RSVP. See you at ScreenplayLab at 3pm at Raleigh Studios on Sunday. If you can't make it please email me a little note so we can cross off printing a badge for you.

Please arrive between 2:30 and 3pm to sign in. This event is full. To ensure a full house we overbook the theater. From experience, we know that half the people who RSVP won't show up. If you come late you won't get a good seat. It's possible you might not get in at all.

From 3pm to 4pm we will have a workshop reading. The main speaker is from 4:15 to 5:45. If the speaker has time she'll stay afterwards to chat in the lobby.

You'll be asked to sign a release:

http://screenplaylab.com/audience.release.html

In a nutshell, it says that if you think people should pay you for ideas (not scripts) then don't say it because nobody expects to pay for ideas discussed in our open forum. You also promise not to annoy our speaker. Note that no executive who works for a major network can accept unsolicited screenplays. You need an agent.

Our speaker Krista Vernoff is the executive producer of GREY'S ANATOMY, the most popular television drama today. Practically every writer in Hollywood would like to work for her, so don't assume she's coming looking for writers. You're going to have an opportunity to ask Krista questions during our session on Sunday. Please make sure your questions are questions, not opinions, and come straight to the point.

ScreenplayLab presents Grey's Anatomy executive producer Krista Vernoff [IMDB]. Raleigh Studios, 5300 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Sunday, Sept. 9th, 2007, 3pm to 6pm. Networking at 2:30pm. GREY'S ANATOMY is the highest-rated scripted series this season. Faced with running two big medical dramas next season, showrunner Shonda Rhimes picked Krista Vernoff as the day-to-day point person on GREY'S ANATOMY. Krista was named executive producer on the show in June. She wrote for three years on CHARMED.

Krista Vernoff Official Bio...

Krista is the Head Writer on ABC's hit drama "Grey's Anatomy." Previously, she wrote for Fox's short-lived but well-loved "Wonderfalls" and spent three years writing about sister witches fighting evil demons in a San Francisco mysteriously bereft of homosexuals on the WB's "Charmed." Other credits include Fox's "Time of your Life" and NBC's "Law and Order." Her first play, "Me, My Guitar and Don Henley" was nominated for a 2005 Ovation award for Best World Premiere Play, and along with the entire writing staff of "Grey's Anatomy," she recently took home a Writer's Guild Award for Best New Show. She was nominated for a 2006 Emmy Award for Dramatic Writing for her episode of Grey's Anatomy, "Into You Like A Train." But, none of this makes her as happy as her husband Kevin and her daughter Cosette, born in March, 2007.

Love you guys!

Avid watcher but this Thursday needed help. Maybe its me but seems that its tough enough to keep up with maybe a dozen characters but now each of the 5-6 major characters have 4-5 new characters to follow them around and I really think they had to have a better way to treat them then like the trash they did. Hope that gets better. And what's with Izzy saving a deers life. A little too much "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" to shock a deer and he stands right up and gets taken away to who knows where. Is this the same fiance' killing Izzy that we all know and love (just kidding). Well i hope they get it better next week. To the writers, look at the shows that made it for years and years. A few dozen main characters and a few repeat characters that keep returning every once in a while to keep us sane and thats it, Look at MASH. Just like that KISS simple and build up. Hate to loose Grey's Anatomy because it gets too complicated and doesn't run together well.
